Junpo Festival is traditional for Li ethnic
minority in Hainan Province. It is said 1300 years history. There are
different explanations for origination and it is held differently in each
branches.

In the middle area of Hainan Province, the Junpo Festival is held on every Chinese traditional June 20. In a legend on the day, the Dong King was born for them. People from all sides come to a parade with the image of the Dong King on the day. When the parade goes to a village, the villagers must be in fine dresses to make a solute. On every harvest years, a theatrical troupe will be invitated to play drama. A saying of this festival's original is that a fisherman who fished on the bank of a river, he caught fish only after he fished out some tree tranks several times; on that night he dreamt a Dong King who came to ask for help, and the fisherman achieved to help him to carve his image by tree trank.The Dong King promised to help them on fishing, and so he did. Such cames the Junpo Festival. In the past years, the Junpo Festival was of jollification; but now it is going to be faint. |

Qiongshan City holds its Junpo Festival from Chinese traditional Feburary 9 to 12, a carnival events will be on the four days. Junpo Festival here is for recollection of Mrs. Xian for their contribution to protect the common people. On every Junpo Festival, the residence will imitate Mrs. Xian to make hundreds little flags to pray for every success. Every family will eat taro, sweet potato, shallot and so on for descends and long lives. Yangge groups and dancing lions groups will compete sing and dance. |
