Aching ethnic minority nationality distributes at Longchuan, Lianghe, Luxi and baosha county in Dehong Dai & Jingpo municipality in Yunan Province. .


The men mainly dress blue, black and white jacket. The unmarried like to tangle white coif, yet the married people like to tangle deep blue coif; the young adult remain 30 centimetre coif behind heads with flowers in. a man going out with an Achang knife is handsome and powerful. Women's dresses are different greatly, but they all decorate themselves with silver accouterments. A married woman wear skirt and a jacket with narrow sleeves; being leg wrapping and black and blue cloth to tangle heads. An unmarried woman wear trouser with plaits coiled on head.


A compound is for a family. The principal room is for people's living. The wing-rooms for storing. Pig bed and byre are downstairs. Houses in a whole village are in order. Stone roads are convenient for transportation.

They are famous for good at planting water paddy.

Love is free for young people. in the evening, a young boy will go near his lover's family to play lusheng (a kind of bamboo reed-pipe) to attract the girl. In some area, young people sit around fire singing love songs all night, which is called 'chuang gu niang'.

They carry on inhumation. In Buddhism area, when a person is dead, a lama will read lection. A funeral will be on a chosen day. The lama will tie a piece of long cloth on coffin and draw it ahead to let the dead goes safely to heaven. when the coffin is carried out of the door, the wife and children of the dead will kneel on sides. The coffin should be high above them, which mean to build bridges for the dead. It is prohibited to bury aglet with the dead. If someone is dead for sickness and dystocia, he or she will be cremated.


Chuwa Festival

Chuwa Festival, which means escort Buddha coming out from temples, is held on Dais' traditional calendar December 15 at Dehong area in Yunnan Province; and the feasts days last three days. Commonly it is slack season after harvest.

Young people can enjoy themselves freely on the three days. On fifteen, unmarried boys will parade in villages with paper flowers, accompanied with the music of elephant-feet-drums. On the contrary, the old men will go into temples to burn joss sticks and they will burn out sacrifice that have been worshiped before, which means Buddha have gone out. On sixteen, a ceremony will held for Buddha's 'Chuwa', and all the unmarried girls will go into temples to worship Buddha. On seventeen, boys and girls get together to listen to lection. After that, people sing joyfully and dance freely. People greet each other; and for young men and young women it is a happy time, since then they can get in love and get married.


Change Yellow Clothes

Changing-yellow-clothes is held on during Chinese traditional calendar of September or October at Dehong area. The common people will carry on -candles, paper and food, especially yellow clothes for Buddha. After they worship images of Buddha, they will listen to reading lection. After all these are done, yellow clothes will be changed for images of Buddha to show the believers' pious.


Huijie Festival

Huijie Festival is traditional, which is normally for material intercourse and young people to go on sociality and express feelings. White elephant and green dragon, made of bamboo and decorated with color paper, wave lively to display their wisdom and hope.

Wole Festival
Wole Festival is for memory of Zhe Pama and Zhe Mima who are primogenitors to save them from disasters and evils. It is held on Chinese traditional agenda January. On the day, young or old get all dolled u, dancing ecstatically. Sometimes, they offer bands of flowers and fruits on Wole desk

The laborious Achangs are famous for planting water paddy. Their staple-food is rice, beside potato, vegetable and meat. They like foods with acidity.

They believe in Buddha and have lots of tabu, for example, when they sacrifice village gods, anyone is prohibited to work outside villages, and strangers is not allowed to walk in.

Men cannot work through under women's skirt which is dried. Women cannot sit on doorsill; a new daughter-in-law cannot have meals with her father-in-law. A man is forbidden to enter in seven days when a baby is born. They taboo aglet to be buried with the dead, which they think such things will influence the dead to be reborn. They carry on inhumation, only when some one is dead for ill or dystocia, he will be incremated.


Achang is an old-line nation with creation lots of exquisite culture art. The legends, fables, poesy and drama drew materials widely, which displayed their kindness, bravery and simple. They like to dance and sing, accompanied with many instruments.

The industrial arts are colorful on painting, carving, embroidery, dying and silver utensils with beautiful design and fine technics. At Husa area, the Achang people is good at forging iron and is famous for produce knives and swords.
