There are almost 80 thousand population living near Blang mountain, Xiding area,Bada area and other place in south of Xishuangbanna in Yunnan Province, who belong to the Blang nationality.The Blang area is abundant of purple peduncle, cotton and sugarcane. The world famous tea 'Pu'er' is from there.


The Blang men dress themselves with double front of garment and black big wide long trousers. They tattoo various design on bodies. The Blang women wear succinct short shirt with narrow sleeves and without collar. Some little girls wear white, red or green frock, accompanied black pailform skirt. The skirt is weaved with white, red and black lines. They tie leg wrappings around their legs. They coil hair with black or cyan headband and decorate the hairstyle with silver ornaments or some colorful lines with beading. The unmarried girls like to wear red, yellow and white flowers.

The Blang people keep simple and unsophisticated relique. They are told to respect the old people on everything. They are ardent in commonweal. They help each other and integrated. Good order and relationship is the outstanding in the Blang society.

Marriage is different between Lincang area and Xishuangbanna. In Lincang area, people of the same surname will not get married, and a matchmaker and present are necessary. In the area of Xishuangbanna, the young people are free in love without interference from their parents. They prevail the custom of living in the wife's family. After wedding, some husbands live in the wives' family in their lifetime; but some only stay in for two or three years. In this period, a husband has meal and works in his own family, and only sleeps in his wife's family. After three years, when they have a child, they will make another wedding. In this manner, a husband can get his wife with him to his family.

They carry out inhumation. There is communal cemetery in jungles near the villages. Where the dead is buried is according to his identity. No matter what kind of person is dead, the whole village will stop yield a day to show mourning.

A lot of taboo exists. In their yards, two poles are forbidden to lean against and fasten horses. When someone wants to get into a temple, he must take off his shoes and smoking is not allowed. Everyone should not feel monks' shoulders and heads. From the big sacrifice to dragon tree in February to the small sacrifice in July, anyone cannot bring green plant to the village, and building is stopped. The violator will be punished a couple of chook and a jar of watery wine, and other things.

Oral literature is abundant, and affecting stories and epics come down in the folk people. Folk melody is colorful. They blend songs, dance and Chinese Wushu together. Young men and young women have to learn many kind of melodies and dances, otherwise, they won't find out a lover.
