Bonan is a minority with the population of only about 12,000(in 1990). The language their people spoken sounds like the Mongolian of Altai. For the close relationships with the Han and Hui nationalities, people of Bonan use the Chinese character very well.

Maybe Bonan can be called a "young minority" for its short history of 600 years to the others with almost thousands years history.

Most of Bonan people live in south Gansu province, both at the border of Qinghai province in northwest China.

Different from women's colorful costume, men always wear white or black cap, white gown and dark blue waistcoat. Especially in the festivals, men and women will dress themselves up.

Their main foods are wheat, corn, bean, mutton and beef.
Marriage of Bonan is strictly practiced according to Islamic rules. Monogamy, but do not marry a close relative or a non-Muslim. Usually a wedding is full of funny customs. And the inhumation funeral is quite simple.
There is never lack of oral culture like the tale, legend, song, music and aphorism. Bonan people are good at dancing, singing and playing the stringed and woodwind instrument.

Besides of the traditional religious festivals, such as the Al-Fitr, Kuban and the Anniversary of the Prophet's Demise, they prefer the "Tripping Mountain Festival" from the end of May to the beginning of June. During the festival, people enjoy the outdoor life with tent, pot and abundant food by the riverside, in the mountain or on the grassland.

Almost same as other Muslim believers, they do not eat any meat of pig, horse and donkey. It is impolite if the guest who visited a house of Bonan enter the kitchen and the bedroom of woman. As well it is not good to sit at the doorway, especially the woman.

As far as the handicraft, they have mastered the smelting technique for long time. Especially the broadsword is a well-known craftwork among the Chinese minorities.
