Derung nationality dwells at Derung Valley in Derung and Nuzu Autonomous County. There are almost over five thousand people in Derung nationality.

Derung valley stretches three hundred miles, on its east, stands maestoso five thousand metres height of the Gaoli Go Mountain; and on its west crouches the Dandanglika Mountain of four thousand meters height. The two mountains echo each other from distance, winging and being continuous for miles, which is of grand and pageantry. Virgin forests covers the hillside, and the Derung people hosts their free life with nature.

They keep the virtue of primitive simplicity. No matter what they get when hunting or fishing, they would share among the villagers, and even a stranger will get a portion. They are noble-minded. When they play host to visitors, they do as could as they can; and they think it is ignominious to have the visitors starved. Manners are important, and a visitor should respect their special manners.

'kaque Wa' is the only festival for the Derung people, which means year festival. In that festival, they will hold ceremonies of sacrifice mountain god and sacrifice the heave with a cattle. People gather on the square singing and dancing. Everyone will share a piece of beef and eat on the spot.

They state their feeling inside by singing and dancing. 'Manzhu' is named for ballad, and can be divided into labor songs, love songs, custom songs and living songs. 'Manzhu' reflect their marriage, relationship, religion, labor, and happiness things.
