Dongxiang nationality has a population about 370,000 and almost a half live in the west Gansu Province. Its name comes from the Dongxiang town they lived. Instead of an independent, Dongxiang was regarded as a branch of other nationality until the new country founded in 1949. The religion they believed is Islam, but the language they spoken is Mongolian.
It is said that Dongxiang originated from the dynasty of Genghis Khan. Through marriage and communication with other people, they set up a new minority.

Different from most of the minorities on the back of horses in northwest China, to plough in the field is their main lifestyle..

Not only the Muslim festivals, but also some traditional festivals they had every year. Such as the Grain Festival is a special one usually for women and children, but men attend the praying ceremony. Plenty of delicious food will be prepared for the feast.

Dongxiang people love "tea soup" extremely, which a food even can be seen at each meal table. In the winter morning, every housewife will cook tea soup for her family member to keep warm. The soup is made of the oil of cattle or sheep, flour, tea and some condiments.

Mosque can be found everywhere in Dongxiang villages. People learn Arabic earnestly, so many knowledgeable religionists come from Dongxiang minority.
Whether the rich or the poor, there is nothing buried with the dead, or music, or flower, even portrait of the deceased, because Dongxiang people prefer a simple religious funeral.
