population of Ewenki ethnic group is only about 26,000. Most of Ewenki people
live in the Heilongjiang province and Inner Mongolia. There are three local
languages but no any characters. Where they live decides which language
they use. Mongolian will be spoken in the pastoral area, and Mandarin will
be spoken in the farming area. "Ewenki" means "people living in the mountain and forest" in Tungus language. It is recorded that their ancestor came from Baikal and lived by fishing and raising the reindeer. More than one thousand years ago, a branch migrated to the Heilongjiang River.
The ethnic is much experienced in feeding reindeer, which a kind of cold-resistant
beast. People use it to carry something while moving house, shopping and
hunting. The Ewenki hunters worship bear, they will hold a "wind funeral" by hanging the bear's head, bones and entrails on the tree if they catch a bear in the forest. As well all of Ewenki adore fire, there are some taboo such as do not stir fire by knife, do not play fire, to sacrifice fire by the bride in the wedding and etc. About their marriage, an interesting form called "escaping marriage" is can be seen today. If a boy falls love with a girl, he will tell his parent after they decide the wedding date. His parent will set up a new tent without any negotiation to the girl's parent, and a simple tent for an aged woman to wait the new couple. At the night, the girl will escape from her house to the new tent with her lover by riding horse. It means a legal marriage has been already finished after the aged woman changed the bride's plaits from eight to two. Before the dawn coming, the young couple will go to their parent's tent to sacrifice the fire and ancestor. At the same time, someone will be sent to the bride's former home to inform her parent and sacrifice her ancestor.
A main festival is the "Aobao Meeting" for Ewenki. "Aobao" means heaps of stones used as markings for roads or boundaries, afterward it is regarded as the living place of god. It is a typical religious festival both for Mongolian and Tibetan. People pray for harvest and happiness by sacrificing the god with bull and sheep. Certainly, some sports including the horse racing and rassling will be happened. "Mikuole" is another festival for celebrating the harvest at the end of May. Herdsmen will come together with colorful costume to brand for the cattle.
Most of Ewenki believes the Shamanism, so they still keep some original totems as the animal and plant. Also some areas believe the Lama and some believe the Orthodox Church.
Ewenki has unique knowledge on counting the time, distance, direction, climate and metrology. For example, they express distance through how many days on horse or how many days on vehicles. |
