eighty percent Kirgiz people (total population 140,000) live in Xinjiang
Uygur Autonomous Region, other hundreds people migrated to Heilongjiang
Province two hundreds years ago.
People build their tents with felt cover, grass curtain and red willow
wooden frame. There is a round window opened on the top of the tent for
lighting, but it will be covered in winter. Herdsmen usually move their
"houses" from the valley facing sun to the riverside as summer
coming. A fireplace is set in the middle of the tent under the clearstory
for cooking.
Seldom of vegetable, but full of milky food are seen at the table of herdsmen. Besides the Muslim, some people are Lama and Shamanism followers of Kirgiz. A common family of Kirgiz comprises of three generations, sons will not separate from parent even they set up a new family. Two steps should be carried in a marriage including the engagement and wedding. The certain bridegroom will send two sheep to the bride's house, one is boiled and the other is toasted. In the formal wedding, the new couple will be bound at the entrance of the tent by the bride's relatives until the groom's father and brothers beg for "release" through gifts. The wedding will be ended when the couple shares a piece of cake blessed by imam. The funeral is very grand including pattering by the imam, singing "funeral
song" by relatives, carrying the dead to the graveyard by camel.
During the important festivals, people gather on the field or grassland to celebrate by singing, dancing, telling story and holding various sport programs.
Manas is a splendid epic represented the Kirgiz' culture. Actually, it can be called a cyclopedia of the tribe in ancient times. The book tells a story about Manas family's experience of fighting for freedom. As well as, their life and thought are described in the book. |
