In the south of our great China, Hainan Island is just like a brilliant bright pearl, twinkling on the rushing wave. The brave Li ethnic group is living on the beautiful island.


There is great difference among different branches. A married woman coils a bun on head with a hairpin through which. She wraps embroidered muffle. Her jacket is opened without any buttons. They are hospitable. A guest will be welcomed by pinang. The master will take good care of the guest's belongs and serve him to have a rest. If it is a man, he will be invited to drink wine before a meal, while for a woman, it is on the contrary. Chicken with wine is for honor. A guest should wash his dishes after a meal and has them in the former place.

A man will hold a bowl of wine with both hands and drink it first, and then he will hold another one to the guest. The guest should accept it with both hands too and drink off. After that, a big piece of cooked meat will be presented to the guest's mouth to show Li's sincere and courtesy. When a guest leaves, he will not bring his baggage until they go to the entrance of the village.

Most of the festivals are the same as the Han's: the Spring Festival, Festival of Lanterns (on Chinese calendar January 15), March 3, Dragon Boat Festival, Ghost Festival, Mid-autumn Festival, Winter Festival, and so on.

On March 3rd, they will celebrate harvest. Lights of needfire bright the night. Girls and boys with colorful attires sit together to sing and find future lover. If a pair of youth fall in love, they will present gift to each other, and then leave away.

Rice, corn and potato are the staple-food. They like to have cooked rice in water. The bamboo tube rice is fragrant and taste.
Men like to have water tobacco and drink glorious rice wine.

They believe ancestors and nature

On the day of planting seeds, water and bloodsucker are not welcom.
Ancestors' name can not be called, except on offering sacrifice day.

Oral literature is rich and colorful around the Li people. The ancient fable, legend, stories, ballads, riddles and proverbs are in many different types. Folktale plays an important role, the famous of which are the Cataclysmal Story, the Calabash Melon, the Powerful God, the Pleasant Worker Bird, and so on.

They are capable to sing and dance. Almost everyone is an artist. They take folksongs the way to express feelings and fighting weapons. They can sing at any moment. The melody mirrors their simple, optimism, upright and resolute character. The dances vary accompanied with the rhythmic, through which kinds of actions are performed under the atmosphere of living and humor, which widely be welcomed.
