The Man nationality has the eminent history in China. They built Qing Dynasty and governed the country for almost four hundred years. They distribute in Heilongjiang Province, Jilin Province, Liaoning Province and Hebei Porvince, etc.
A house has two principal rooms. Kitchen is outside. In past, there were three kangs in a backroom, the north was for the elders, the west for the guests and the south was for the girls. The windows of a house are towards south and west.
Before seventeen century, when the Man people lived in the borderland, they had to be skill at hunting. When a baby was born, a pair of bow and arrow would be hung on the door to declare that an excellent shot was born. Because of defending enemies, they learned to arrest enemies by jumping horses, which developed a kind of sport. In old days, a boy's family would go to a girl's family to bring up a proposal of marriage three times with a bottle wine, and only until the third times he would be told the answer. If it succeeded, the girl's family would ask betrothal gifts for the girl's property. On the night of the wedding day, a bride sat on the south kang, which was called 'Zuo Fu' (sitting for happiness). A table was set in the room with two bottles of wine and cups. The new couple held each other's hands to circle three times around the table. A pair of candles were lighted and would not put out. Outside the room, there was someone to sing happy songs, or black beans spread into the room. In three days, the new couple would go back to the bride's family. The south and west kangs could not lie dead person. When someone was dead, he could only be carried out through windows. A long narrow flag was made of red cloth in the middle and black cloth on the end and the beginning. When a funeral was held, the relatives would compete the cloth to make clothes for children, in which way they thought it could prevent evils. They carry on inhumation. It is said that when the first King Nur Ha Chi was defeated and fled from battlefield, a dog followed him. When he was in great danger, the dog saved him. From then on, the Mans' people would never kill dogs. A crow is considered as divine bird for having saved their ancestors, and they offer sacrifice to it. Livestock of strangers can not enter a Mans' family. Bodeful words can not be said. Goodnight is forbidden to the elder when come back at night.
A light collection is traditional festival, which is held on Chinese calendar January 15. people come to enjoy bright moon and every family will hang colorful lights. To offer sacrifice to Lao Ba Tou is traditional sacrificing day in Changbaishan Mountain area. It is said that when the first King Nur Ha Chi was young, he always went into mountains to get what he needed. When he was entitled a king, people worshiped him and made him Lao Ba Tou. They built temples to remember him. When it is on Chinese March 16, people will do as what the King had done befor.
They liked to eat millet and glutinous millet in old days. Cooked Meet
in water without spice, baked meet and 'Saqima' are unique national food.
They once believed in Shamanism.
They take etiquette important. In past, the young generation would salute the elder every three and five days.
The Man nationality was good at learning on culture, technique, and they created lots of works. The famous emperor Kangxi presided and edited lots of scientific books. Many litterateurs, artists came from the Man nationality, such as Lao She, Qigong, Cheng yanqiu and Guang su shuang. Cao xueqin wrote down his famous fiction Dream of the Red Chamber, which push the classical fiction into its high tip. The fiction is being welcomed hundreds years in the population. The ancient Mans like to sing and dance. Many of dances were from hunting and fighting. It was must the strong people to dance with leopard fur and sang their own songs, accompanied with Chinese traditional reed-pipe and drum. It was called Xi Qi Wu. A man who was dressed up as a beast and another who was dressed up as riding a horse to chase was called Long Qing Wu. When it was a happy thing, people will dance in turns and shout 'Kongqi' to echo. the physical culture were jumping horses, jumping camels and skate. The former two were practised to fight enemies. Translating was popular in their development. Many translators were not
only repeating a stories, but created a high bourn for the story language.
