Nu nationality mainly distributes in Bijiang, Fugong, Gongshan and Lanping County in Yunnan Province. They mainly pursue agriculture and the level of fertility is still low. The tools are chopping knives, little iron hoe and little plough, which are low-grade. Bamboo and wood tools are used widely. Field can be divided into 'volcano field', hoe-digJingg field, cattle-ploughing field and paddy field; the former two kinds fields are unfixed, and the last two are fix fields, which only are assarted in recent sixties years under the help of Bai nationality and Han nationality.


They wear flax clothes. A girl when she is twelve, she will have long skirt on and a jacket with right ornaments. Ornaments are necessary for women. they like to tangle thin bine slice around heads, waists and ankles. Men wear long shirt and short trousers.

There are barracks and bamboo houses. A house can be divided into two rooms, the out one is a hall, and the inner one is for bedroom and storing. A visitor can not go in the inner room.

They are kind people. They share what they get among each other.

The staple food is corn. They are lack of vegetables. There is a kind of rat, which is used to serve friends and visitors. At Gongshan area, a kind of gallet can bakes fragrant and sweet crisp cake, which keeps the intrinsic flavour of food materials.

They worship nature and believe there is a spirit in everything.

Wine is necessary for asking a marriage. When a man get married, he will build a new house near where his parents live. He can get some property. He keeps working with the whole family. The youngest son lives with his parents, and he can inherit every thing.

They carry on inhumation. When an adult is dead, the whole village will stop working to mourn him. They only maintain tombs on the first year.

Fairy Festival is celebrated when rhododendrons bloom. A village chooses several limestone cave to offer sacrifice. Everyone bring a bunch of rhododendron flowers, offerings, wine bottle and corn to the caves to pray. When they come back, they will hold carnival.

The cottage industry is mainly on weaving, bamboo utensils, and carpentry, forJingg iron and brewing. Weaving is the women's work and the product is mostly for families' consume; only when surplusage, they take it to exchange necessities. A family can provide itself household utensils.
