Salar, a kind of ethnic minority nationality in China, mainly dwells on Xuanhau Salar Autonomous County in Qinghai Province. They mainly carry on faring of planting wheat, buckwheat, potato and so on; stocking raising ,lop produce, salt making and weaving wool are also their sideline. By now, the industry has been developing, almost every family has a fruit garden and fruits are abundant. Some of agriculture production are famous in and outside Qinghai Province.

Their costume is the same as Huis'. The difference is on the coat. The coat of a Salar is fat and tied a piece of cloth around waist. A man wear white caps in shape of six angle or black round cap. A young man have white shirt on with a waistcoat outside. A woman dress colorful with decoration.

They believe in Islam, and in many ways they are the same as the Huis' customs. They obey the rules of Islam greatly.

They are particular about etiquette, especially on respecting the old and the senior. The youth will greet the old firstly. Their hold a respectful attitude. no matter a person in what kind of nationality or in what kind status, he will be served hospitably, furthermore, they don't refuse a man outside the door.

They have no letters, most of their cultural literature are descended by orals. They have not a certain form of dance, they dance only by impromptu. The only musical instrument is Kouxiang, which sounds low but graceful.

Unique Transportation-Sheepskin sack:

The wise Salar people peel off a sheep's whole skin and they make it clear; before rubbed softly by salt and oil, it will be dried. Then, a leg, around the neck and on the hip will be tied tightly, only a foreleg is left to boost air in. when ferry across a river, the sheepskin sack will be puffed air fully and tied tightly, in such way, a boat is made.
