Tatar people, most dwell on Yining, Ta City and Wulumuqi City in Xianjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. they keep close relationship with Uygur and Hazak, and are affected greatly from their communication. They also believed in Islam..


A man of Tatar ethnic minority nationality is often with embroidered white shirt with a black short waistcoat or a black gown. A rousers is also black so does a cat with black and white embroidered flower design. In winter, a man will have a black fur hat. A woman takes it beautiful that a little flowery hat with beads. She like to wear white, yellow or purl long skirt with crape. Earrings, bracelet and necklace of red beads decorate a woman. The costumes if such way are traditional.

They like to hang wall hanJinggs. They have fire walls in house to make warm. Their houses are kept tide. A yard is also a little garden to be comfort. In herds area, the tatar people live in tents.

When a couple makes a family, they often live apart from their parents, but they still support their parents. A young tatar person get married with other Islam opposite sex. A wedding ceremony is held in the bride's family. A new couple will share a cup of sweet water, which means happy forever. A bridegroom will live in his father-in-low's family for some time. When a baby is born, there also exist kinds of ceremonies. In three days, the baby will be named according to the Islam. The grandmother will present the baby a cradle and clothes. When the baby is forty days, water will be got from forty places to bathe the baby, which means to bathe water from the four direction to hope the baby has a healthy life.

When someone is dead, the body will be cleared and tangled with a piece of white cloth; a stone or a knife will be put on. The relative will mourn,; a man with black yarn covering on hats and a woman will tangle white yarn around head. The body will be put on 'Jinazi' ( a kind of bodylitter) when carry a coffin to the cemetery. A piece of white cloth or white headpiece will be put on the body to show it is a man's or a woman's. when carry the 'Jinazi' out door, the feet is first,; and when it is out, the direction will be changed to the cemetery. Before burying, everyone who accompanies to the cemetery will catch a hand of mud to put on the breast of the body; then Koran is read; after then the body is buried.

Tatar women are famous for cooking, they are skill at make cakes. Their believe in Islam, and their lives are affected deeply by Islam. Cheese, dried apricot, rice, pumpkin and mutton are materials for cooking cakes, the production of which is crispy outside and soft inside, which tastes good.

In festival, they often hold on dancing compete among people. Saban Festival is a grand collection on every year. They dance, wrestle, compete horse skill and do other collection sports. Competing jumping and running is welcomed, every competitor holds a spoon with an eggs to run, the winner will be the one who run first and the egg is not dropped to the ground.

They believe in Islam.

When a person meet another one, they would greet with holding hands. Women mostly hold all their hands. They respect the old, also they are friendly to a visitor. They have lots of taboo because of Islam

The cultural life is rich and color. Their rhyme of music is vivid and full of the feeling tone of the grassland. Kind of music instruments are many. Their dance collect the character of Uygur, Russ and Uzbak; the men's steps mainly are legs' actions, such as kicking when squat, jumping and so on; while the women's actions are by hands and moving waist. The drama arts were developed early in Xianjiang area.
