Ancestors of Yi nationality had lived and propagated early in remote antiquity
in Yunnan and Sichuan Province. They engaged in farming and nomadism.
They hate people call them Lao Yibao or Manzi, which badly insult them, the one speaks in that way will be beat. When visit a Yis' family, fireplace cannot be tramped. They sit on the ground in a circle, no matter friends or strangers hold a bowl of wine drink in turns, which they call 'zhuang zhuang jiu'. Before a meal, a master must bake livers of cattle or sheep for visitors to show respect. After a meal the upper arms and head of a sheep will present for the guests heads of chickens are for the most distinguished visitors or the eldest. It is impolite to get more when eating up.
The Firebrand Festival is a common festival for all branches. Villagers hold firebrands go around houses and fields to expel insects. Secondly, whole villages will collect together around needfire, playing instruments, sinJingg and dancing a night and a day to celebrate harvest. In the Firebrand Festival, boys wearing flowerage waistbands is to tell girls that they have lovers. Those boys who have not flowerage waistbands can find their lovers with single girls. Besides, Festival of Ikebana is a royal conventional festival. In March, there are camellia, azalea and mayinghua all over mountains and plains. Boys and girls climb mountains to pick up fresh flowers with attire and songs. In jungles, on sides of fountains, zigzag hill ways, happy sounds and joyful laughing can be heard everywhere. Flowers are interposed around houses and doors, and even cattle and sheep wear flowers. They celebrate the spring's arrival and pray for prosperity. Lovers interpose flowers to each other.
Collection dance is popular. The participators stand a circle, hands in hands, dancing accompanied by reed, yu-kin and other music instruments. A Xi Tiao Yue is a kind of famous Yis' dance. |
