Couplets of Beijing's Siheyuan
|
| Lin Xianghuai(China) |
| Siheyuan is a unique architectural style among China's residential buildings. Born with it is a cultural phenomenon with China's unique characteristics. In ancient time, people, whether they were nobles or commons, liked to paste couplets on the doors of their residences. Couplets were written in various letter styles and some of them were printed or engraved on the door. The contents of these couplets were mostly related to moral standards upheld by the masters, their social status or professions. In recent years, with the substantial expansion of urban areas, modern skyscrapers are increasingly replacing the old-styled siheyuan. The tradition of pasting couplets is also gradually vanishing. | ||
