Lanyu Island

  Lanyu, which means "Orchid Island", was called "Red-head Island" until 1946, when it was named after a type of butterfly-like orchid.
Yamei People are the main residents of the island. They hold a sacrificial ceremony for cultivation in the first lunar month, for fishing in the third or the fourth month, and for ceramics in the tenth lunar month. In addition, they hold inauguration ceremonies for new buildings and memorial ceremonies for bumper harvests.		  
   
  1. A unique type of canoe.  
   
  2. Their society is similar to a matriarchal society. The woman is bathing a baby.  
   
  3. Trial marriages are very popular among the Yamei people. Women control the family.  
   
  5. This is the only clothing the male owns. It can also be used by fishermen to hold fish.  
   
  6. Their six tribes are named after six streams: Dongqing, Yeyin, Hongtou, Yuren, Yeyou and Langdao. The eldest is the leader. Their armor is made from flax and they wear it for sacrificial ceremonies.  
   
  7. Yamei people eat potato and fish. Most of them are heavy smokers.  
   
  8. They believe in ghosts and gods.  
   
  9. Some of them have accepted Christianity.  
   
  10. Their houses resemble caves. They enjoythe cool of the pavilion outside their house. The old eat black fish, the middle-aged eat blue fish and the children eat red fish.  
   
  11. The climate is like spring all year round, with an average temperature of 20℃.
