Embroidered Faces of Li Girls
Li Rong (China)

It is said that Ta tan were multiplied by the mother of the Lis. Thus, in order to commemorate the mother of the Lis Ta tan warns their descendant: Every girl must embroider their face and tattoo. Because this is the rule made by their ancestor. And if the girl does not abide by the rule, she will not be recognized by their ancestor. Usually, girls are embroidered and tattooed at the age of twelve, so call "open-face".
In fact, there are different kinds of records and legends about tattoo of the Lis girls. It is said that Ye, the ancestor of Ta tan worship the totem of frog and snake. As a result, Ta tan enjoys embroidering snake or worm on their clothes, even on their bodies. Actually, after Qing Dynasty, Lis girls are very proud of their embroidered face and they look on it as an ornament. What's more, embroidered face also reflects the hierarchy. In fact, embroidered face is a kind of ornament for only the rich woman. And maidservants are not allowed to embroider their face. And in order to distinguish different clans, the designs of embroider are different in different districts.
However, after the founding of the People' Republic of China, the custom that Lis girls should embroider and tattoo has disappeared. And there are few embroidered Lis girls today. Although the phenomenon (embroider, tattoo) is going to extinct, the designs and pictures of embroider and tattoo always make people look back that time: the integral entity of aesthetic awareness and pursuit among the Lis, nature, nature worship, totem worship and ancestor worship.
