| Chaozhou's Woodcarving, to be famous for industrial
arts, spread over the area of Chaoshan in Guangdong Province, juxtaposed
with the Dongyang's woodcarving in Zhejiang Province the two leading system
of woodcarving in the folk. It is famous for its engraved in different layers,
brilliant and golden, exaggerated decoration, fine and exquisite.
Choazhou's woodcarving began from Tang Dynasty, rapidly developed in Song and Ming Dynasties, and it reached its top in Qing Dynasty. At the end of the Qing Dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China, the overseas came back to build ancestral temples and magnificent houses greatly. They used a great deal of Chaozhou woodcarving, which developed which to the top. Most of the present woodcarving is bequeathed from that period. The Chaozhou's woodcarving is used widely, generally speaking, it can decorate architecture, furniture, supernatural being and on tables. There are different kinds: all gild woodcarving, painting gold colorful woodcarving, red or black lacquer woodcarving and log-texture simple woodcarving, the most famous of which is golden-lacquer woodcarving. The techniques of making it can be divided into Chendiao(concave), Fudiao(protruding), Yuandiao(solid), Tongdiao(layers) and Ju-tongdiao(monolayer). The outstanding Tongdiao combines the technique of Fudiao and Yuandiao and so on. |
