Lifestyles of women within the Realm of the Mosuo People

Patrick Aventurier(France)

Within the confines of the Yunnan and Sichuan Provinces of China, lives one of the last matriarchal societies to exist in the world. For the last two thousand years, the Mosuo have had no cognizence nor need for the practice-of marriage, and their culture has transmitted a lifestyle, which necessitates neither husband not fathers. The woman is placed at the center of this unique social structure, based on the precepts and customs of free love. Within in the fishing villages on Lake Lugu hidden within the depths of the Yongning Plain we were to share this lifestyle with both the men and the women of the Mosuo people on a daily basis for two entire weeks. The rhythms imposed by their rituals and customs flavored our stay, giving our perception of their unique way of life a distinctive and authentic flavor. A journey into one of the last hideaways of a lost paradise continues to resist, but for how long which can still exist? -The imperatives of the modern world.
