In the traditional Chinese society, torii are the symbol for lofty honour. Torii originally consisted of a beamed door, namely two pillars with a beam across. Later it gradually developed into three categories: stone, brick and wooden torii. The unique torii integrate sculpture, painting, plaques with couplets or poems and calligraphy. They embody views on social life, morality, folkway and customs, and show magnificent charm of art, high aesthetic value and deep rich historic and cultural connotation.

To show off torii, embody their function and attract more attention from other people, many torii were built on post roads, which can be found along with the torii. It is useful to study the ancient transportation. This project is to introduce the torii set up on the ancient post roads where the masses gathered, solders and officers passed by and businessmen concentrated. Among the torii, filial piety torii take a high proportion.
